As we covered in a previous post, a mobile app can be a worthwhile investment for your business. Having one can differentiate you from your competitors and give you a powerful way to connect with your customers. We also discussed how to determine whether or not a mobile app would be a good fit for your business. Now, let’s talk about how to get one made and how it should function.
Setting The Foundation
There are a number of ways to have your app made. You can use a variety of tools available to develop it yourself or you could hire an app developer. Here are a few pros and cons to consider with either choice.
Hiring A Developer
This would be the most expensive option but would likely have the best results. You would also spend less time working on the development and upkeep of the app. When looking for a developer it always pays to do your homework. That means, of course, you should scrutinize their portfolio and browse their testimonials. But if possible go even further than that. Find an app they’ve developed and try it out for yourself. See if their design style works with what you have in mind. Then, if possible, track down one of their clients and ask about how it was to work with the developer. The more you put into this process the more you’ll get out of it later.
Building the app yourself
This can save a good amount of money but it will likely take much longer. Clearly, the more complex the app the harder it will be to build but that also doesn’t mean building a simple app is going to be a walk in the park. Creating an app can be a highly technical undertaking, but luckily there are a number of tools at your disposal. You can find a plethora of them with a quick internet search but we like this list put together by PC Magazine. It gives you a lot of different options, both paid and free.
There’s a lot that goes into making your own app but you should make sure yours has a well-determined function. Find out what would most benefit your business and your customers–then go from there.
